We are the Country's Leader in Pain Management Policy and Advocacy

AIPM is widely recognized as the nation’s foremost voice in developing and advocating for public policies that enable health care providers to provide optimal care to those living with pain.

Improving Policies That Affect Your Patients and Practice

AIPM’s Policy and Advocacy Team works to improve the ability of health care providers to provide high-quality comprehensive integrative pain management to their patients. Further, in order to ensure patients can access this high-quality care, AIPM advocates for policies that improve access to, and affordability of, all appropriate therapeutic approaches to reduce pain and achieve optimal health and healing.

AIPM actively works to:

  • Ensure prescribing and dispensing guidelines related to pain treatments and/or opioid analgesics are balanced and thoughtful in their approach, helping state and federal policymakers to avoid negative unintended consequences to patients and their health care providers.
  • Improve insurance coverage and reimbursement for comprehensive integrative pain management services provided by the entire scope of licensed and certified health care providers.
  • Reform policies related to prior authorization and step therapy so that patients are able to receive their medications in a timely manner and so that health care providers are able to spend less time on the phone fighting for approvals and more time with their patients.
  • Encourage collaboration among diverse stakeholders representing the full scope of licensed and certified health care providers dealing with pain, mental health, and substance use disorder treatment; public and private payers; policy experts; pain research and patient advocacy organizations; and more.

Take Action on Pain-related Legislation by State or by Issue

Do you want your voice heard as policymakers across the nation grapple with how to tackle the opioid overdose epidemic while simultaneously trying to improve health care for the 100 million Americans living with pain? Check out our legislative trackers to find bills that you care about.

In 2017, AIPM tracked and analyzed more than 1300 bills and nearly 500 regulations related to pain management—and took action on more than 70 policy proposals in 32 states and federally, resulting in many exciting successes across the country!

Integrative Pain Care Policy Blog

Operated by AIPM in conjunction with the members of the Integrative Pain Care Policy Congress, this blog delivers timely updates related to both existing policies related to comprehensive, integrative pain management, as well as opportunities for action related to expanding access to, and coverage of, integrative pain care.
