Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction (SIG)

Focus of SIG:

  • Provide basic-to-advanced education and practical information regarding myofascial pain syndrome.

  • Advance and discuss research, continuing educational opportunities, resources, and case studies concerning diagnosis and treatment of myofascial pain syndrome.

Notes from the 28th Annual Meeting SIG session (10/20/17):

  • The members of this SIG present at the meeting consisted of: about one-third were MD/DOs, one-quarter nurses/PAs, while the rest was comprised of dentists, chiropractors,  acupuncturists, physical therapists, and massage therapists. 

  • This SIG hopes to share their collective wealth of knowledge and experience in diagnosis and treatment protocols and techniques for myofascial pain and dysfunction supported by current research and case studies.

  • There was discussion and questions from the attendees in reference to various techniques and modalities currently utilized in successfully treating myofascial pain.  These included trigger point injections, dry needling, cold/hot (class II-IV) laser therapy, medications (including topical applications), and others. 

  • There was additional discussion regarding the etiology and perpetuating factors of myofascial pain in regards to various differential or accompanying diagnoses, notably fibromyalgia, CFS, radiculopathy, TMJ, and others.  

Goals of Myofascial Pain SIG in 2018:

  • Create and update AIPM’s Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction information and resources.

  • Encourage member participation in online SIG forums and create topics for discussions on research, case studies, etc.
